My favourite artist is Vivian Maier, she was a Street Photographer. She lived in Chicago, and for four decades she worked as a nanny, however in her spare time she was a photographer, a self-taught one.
She took photographs in the streets of Chicago, around the 60's. Most of her photographs aren't only portraits, but also self-portraits. Her pictures were focused on societal subjects for example, emigrants and homeless people.
Even though her work is valorated nowadays, Maier lived as an unknown photographer, her negatives weren’t discovered until 2007, when John Maloof bought a box, in a furniture and antique auction, with her negatives inside of it. Besides of photography she also had pictures in motion and sounds recordings.
Despite the fact that Vivian
wasn't a professional photographer, the technique of her work was
similar to an expert photographer, that's what I like the most of
her. In other words, you don't need a university degree to become a
good photographer.
I think a good
memory about this artist is when my high school art teacher told me
about her. My teacher and the discover of this artist encouraged me
to study photography.
